BUPD General Information
An IACLEA Accredited Law Enforcement Agency
The Baylor University Police Department has a staff of 63 persons, including 37 police officers, 10 dispatchers, 14 Security Officers, an Administrative Manager and a Records Manager.
All Baylor commissioned peace officers and dispatchers must successfully complete an arduous screening process as mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). All officers and dispatchers that work for the Police Department are licensed and certified by TCOLE as meeting the minimum training requirements of the State of Texas for all peace officers or dispatchers.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, officers with the Baylor University Police Department respond to over 10,000 calls a year. The Department operates marked patrol vehicles on campus, a bicycle unit, a Criminal Investigation unit, and a Crime Prevention unit.
The Baylor University Police Department will be the primary reporting and investigating law enforcement agency for all crimes occurring on the Baylor University campus or Baylor owned property. Baylor Officers have the same authority as any municipal officer or sheriff’s deputy. The City of Waco Police Department will be the primary reporting and investigating law enforcement agency for all crimes occurring outside the boundaries of the Baylor campus. Both agencies will continue to provide mutual aid assistance to each other on a daily basis.
All security working on any of the branch campuses, on a permanent basis, or security hired to work special events for Baylor University do not have the authority of a Peace Officer to make arrests under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. They may only make citizens arrests as authorized by the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 14.01.
The Baylor University Police Department office is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Police dispatchers are on duty at the office (located at the Speight Street Parking garage) to receive calls for service/assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. If you are in need of Police assistance, call 254-710-2222 or 2222 from any campus telephone.
